Cycling for Cohesion is a social enterprise, with the mission to be a catalyst for the spread of social ideas and contribute to a cultural change which enhances the social sustainability of our global community. Social sustainability has been described as occurring:
“when the formal and informal processes, systems, structures, and relationships actively support the capacity of current and future generations to create healthy and liveable communities.”

CFC is about:
- Inspiration - collecting and disseminating stories from people working to make to world a better place, hearing their struggles, triumphs, motivations and rewards.
- Education - specific concepts related to social sustainability are addressed. These are topics I feel are essential to seeing the change we need in the world, and topics that I also feel we need to collectively understand more about before they can be absorbed into our cultural value set. Sustainability requires a culture which values social and environmental capital and investment in communities, not just hip pockets, and acts upon those values.
- Communication - sharing the wonderful work of positive psychology, which proves that doing something for the greater good really does serve you - it makes you happier!! Also illustrating this point through the stories.
- Practical Hints - on how to get involved in giving back the society and environment on which you rely.
The CFC strategy:
I am currently riding solo through Central and South America, collecting stories from people working in areas related to social sustainability, which illustrate the concepts I am working to raise awareness about. The adventurous nature of this stage I hope will grab people’s attention sufficiently to allow the stories to capture their minds and imagination. The next stage will be a venture in social enterprise, cycling around Australia (and beyond, all going well) giving presentations at schools and community centres and writing in local newspapers. Publicity, donations and sponsorship will be central to this stage. More on that later!!
As Einstein said "we cannot solve problems with the same level of thinking at which they were created"
Consider this cultural change:
Imagine a world where excess or greed was uncool.
The possibilities are endless. I'm not saying this will be manifested any time soon, but moving immediately towards this cultural shift lies my hope for the future of humanity. We need this. It will be so hard, for example, to address the climate change issue where the most serious ramifications impact the future, a distance which cultivates willing ignorance. In a democratic situation, reforms and revolutions - the generating of political energy - usually only happen when the people being negatively affected are numerous enough to bring their weight to bear. We need this cultural shift to enable us to respond to what we think will happen, not what already has.
